Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above sea level. Located in the beautiful Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers one of the most rewarding trekking experiences in East Africa. The mountain is renowned for its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, stunning crater views, and breathtaking sunrise from Socialist Peak.
Often overshadowed by Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru provides a quieter and more authentic trekking experience with fewer crowds. The trek passes through lush montane forests, open heathlands, and alpine desert terrain before reaching the summit. Along the lower slopes, trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, monkeys, and a variety of bird species, making it one of the few mountains in Africa where wildlife viewing is part of the hiking experience.
The climb follows the Momella Route and includes overnight stays in comfortable mountain huts, making it an excellent alternative to camping. The ascent is gradual, allowing proper acclimatization while offering spectacular views of Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
The summit push begins shortly after midnight, leading hikers along the dramatic crater rim to Socialist Peak. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly unforgettable moment, with panoramic views stretching across northern Tanzania and the silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro illuminated by the morning sun.
Mount Meru is also highly recommended as an acclimatization climb before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro. Its challenging terrain and high altitude help trekkers prepare physically and mentally while enjoying a unique mountain adventure.
