The trek begins gently through a stunning rainforest ecosystem. Thick vegetation, towering trees, vibrant flowers, and a variety of bird species accompany you on this first day. The trail is shaded, cool, and atmospheric, offering an excellent introduction to the mountain.
Arriving at Mandara Hut, enjoy a hot meal before resting. In the late afternoon, you may choose to take a short walk to Maundi Crater, where clear-day views stretch as far as Kenya.

Today’s trail ascends from dense rainforest into the open moorland zone, marked by giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and new vistas of the mountain’s peaks. As you walk, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with views opening toward Mawenzi and Kibo, two prominent volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro.
Your pace is steady and controlled, allowing your body to adapt to elevation. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, take time to relax, enjoy the sweeping views of the valleys below, and savor a warm dinner prepared by your chef.
