About Mkomazi
Mkomazi National Park lies in northeastern Tanzania along the Kenyan border, sharing its ecosystem with Kenya's Tsavo West National Park to form one of East Africa's largest protected wilderness areas. Elevated to national park status in 2008, Mkomazi covers 3,234 km² of classic semi-arid savannah, dry thornbush, and acacia woodland stretching beneath the Pare and Usambara Mountains.
Mkomazi is best known for its critically important black rhino sanctuary and African wild dog breeding programme — two of the continent's most endangered species. The park remains one of Tanzania's least visited, offering a rare sense of solitude and true off-the-beaten-path wilderness to those who venture here.

When is the best time to visit Mkomazi?
June to October is the dry season and the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources and the vegetation thins out. January to March is also good, with warm dry weather and active wildlife.
How do I get to Mkomazi National Park?
Mkomazi is best reached by road from Arusha, approximately 3 to 4 hours drive via Same town. Charter flights can also be arranged to the park's airstrip from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Can I see the black rhinos up close?
The black rhino sanctuary is a fenced protected area within the park. Visits are permitted with park rangers and must be arranged in advance through TANAPA or your tour operator. Sightings are not guaranteed but are possible with the right guidance.
Can I combine Mkomazi with other destinations?
Yes — Mkomazi pairs excellently with a Kilimanjaro climb or Arusha National Park visit, and is close to the Usambara Mountains for hiking. It can also be combined with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro as part of a longer northern circuit safari.
