What is required / mandatory in Tanzania & Zanzibar ?
These are regulation-based or required by safari operators:
- Inbound Travel Insurance for Zanzibar: Since October 1, 2024, visitors going to Zanzibar are required to purchase mandatory insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC)
- Cost is USD 44 for adults, ~half for children aged 3-17. Children under 3 often free.
- Covers emergency medical, personal accidents, baggage delay/theft, legal liabilities etc for stays up to 92 days.
- Must be purchased before arrival.
Mandatory Travel Insurance for Mainland Tanzania: Beginning mid-2025 foreign visitors to Tanzania (excluding some countries in East Africa etc.) will also be required to have travel insurance. The cost also USD 44 per person for up to 92 days.
Safari companies will often insist you have proof of valid travel insurance before your safari begins. Many lodges/parks won’t let you stay unless you do.
