What to check in a policy & how much coverage is reasonable

To avoid being surprised, make sure:

  • Sum insured (limits) are high enough. Evacuation & hospital costs in remote areas can be huge. Many sources recommend at least USD 100,000 for medical; USD 200,000-300,000+ if you’ll do mountain trekking or remote stays.
  • Evacuation / rescue includes helicopter or air ambulance, esp if going into remote national parks or climbing.
  • Adventure activity coverage is explicit. If you plan to climb Kilimanjaro or do balloon rides or scuba/snorkeling, ensure these are covered. Some policies exclude them or require a special add-on.
  • Cancellation / curtailment: Look for refund for lodging, flights, etc., if you have to cancel due to illness, weather, family emergency. Also interruption (cutting the trip short).
  • Baggage / gear insurance especially if carrying expensive cameras, equipment. Theft or damage/delay is a likely risk.
  • Liability cover in case you accidentally damage property or injure someone.
  • Read small print about exclusions (e.g. altitude limits, health conditions, some safari‐vehicle risks, etc.).
